0 to 10V is being used as a  voltage representation for field Instrumentation measurement range.

( 0 to 10V )  Signal from the Instruments, will be  send to an analog Card  reside in a PLC / DCS Controller.

In the PLC/ DCS Controller, the voltage signal will be converted back to its Actual Instrument value  by multiplying it with a scale Constant .

How  to Convert 0 to 10V  ? 

Example Scenario

(1)   E&I engineer went  on site to measure  the  Analogue Output Voltage   of a Temperature Transmitter . The Value  recorded  was  5V.

(2)  He then  check the Temperature Transmitter Specification Sheet . The Minimum Range is 0°C , while the Maximum range is 200°C

(3)He  got the Measured Current , and  want to know what is the Calculated Temperature  ?

 

The Findings  as below

Signal Range in Voltage :  0 to 10V

Instrument Range : 0°C to 200°C

Measured Current Value :   5V

Instruments Current Value :      ??°C   ( This is what he wanna Find Out )

 

Step 1

Determine the Range of the Field instrument

Range  = High Limit – Low Limit

Range =  200°C – 0 °C

Step 2

Analog Range  = 10-0

Step 3

Calculate Temperature Value base on field measured voltage

Instrument Temperature = 200 x [ 5/10 ]

= 100°C

 

How To Calculate Analog Raw Value ?

Example 

(1) PLC Engineer is trying to convert field measure Value in Voltage to PLC Raw Value

(2) The PLC used for this Application is a Siemens PLC

(3)  He Requested his Colleague to assist him to measure the Field instrument Device , His Colleague got a measurement of 5V from the Field RTD

 

The Findings  as below

Signal Range in Voltage :  0 to 10V

Instrument Range : 0°C to 200°C

Measured Current Value :   5V

Siemens PLC Analogue Raw Range : 5529 to 27648

Step 1 :

Calculate PLC Raw Range

PLC Raw Range = 27648 – 5529 = 22119

 

Step 2:

Convert measured Voltage to PLC Raw Data

PLC Raw Data =[ PLC Raw Range  x [ (Measured Field Voltage ) /10 ] ] + Low Raw Limit

PLC Raw Data =[ 22119  x [ (5V ) /10V ] ] + 5529

PLC Raw Data = 16589
